Neuropsychologists investigate where and how beliefs and ideas are formed in our brains and why they are so difficult to change, even if they are proven wrong. Whatever you believe, it reassures you and helps you interpret the world.

On Slovene blog site Brst Psychology they shared this idea on mistaken beliefs. They emphasise that our actions often stem from our deeply rooted beliefs and assumptions about ourselves, the world and life in general. Beliefs can be acquired from parents, extended family, friends, peers, teachers and the general social environment. These beliefs are usually so entrenched in us that we often do not recognize them as beliefs at all, but understand them as the bare truth that reflects reality.

Beliefs are related to our perceptions. We look at the world and the events that happen to us based on the beliefs we have about ourselves and the world. We all agree that the earth revolves around the sun. But before Gallileo Galilei discovered this more than 400 years ago, people firmly believed that the earth was the center of the universe.
Today we find this ridiculous, but back then people did not doubt their right. It was about their belief, which is based on data, or stories, that they knew at that time.

It is the same with our personal beliefs. They are based on experiences, views of the world or learned guidelines given to us by society. James Allen, author of the book "As Man Thinks", said that: "man's actions always arise from beliefs." A certain positive belief enables us to "take action", on the other hand, a negative belief limits and holds us back. For example, that we want to work abroad. If we are sure that our knowledge of a foreign language is not good enough and therefore we will not be hired, this can prevent us from even sending an application for the desired position. On the other hand, the belief in one's good speaking skills can further encourage us to apply for the advertised position and thus allow ourselves to fulfill our wish. Therefore, positive beliefs encourage behavior that allows us to have more positive outcomes. On the other hand, limiting beliefs can hold us back and prevent us from acting in the direction of what we want.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

  • What are some of your deep personal beliefs. Did they ever limit you? Think of one. And explore how would your decisions be different if this belief would not be so strong.
  • How would you advice (young) people you work with, if they would be faced with a belief that has negative affects on their life?

This is one out of 9 activities, created for the "Walk with challenges" workshop that took place during the "My step forward" training course, organised by Socialna akademija and its partners and co-funded by Erasmus+. The training course took part in Celje, Slovenija, between 7th and 14th of July 2022. Still, this activity is part of the learning playlist that can be used by anybody, anytime. So gather a group and take a walk ... with challenges... and ... make your FIRST STEP FORWARD!
